FAST & Direct: Recognizing Stroke and Heart Attack in the US
In a cardiovascular emergency, every second counts. Recognizing the signs early can save a life and prevent permanent disability. This guide aligns with American Heart Association (AHA) recommendations.
Think FAST for Stroke
The AHA recommends the FAST test to quickly identify the signs of a stroke:
Does one side of the face droop or feel numb? Ask the person to smile — is it uneven?
Is one arm weak or numb? Ask them to raise both arms — does one drift downward?
Is speech slurred or hard to understand? Can they repeat a simple sentence correctly?
If any of these signs are present, call 911 immediately. Note the time symptoms started.
🚨 Heart Attack Warning Signs
Symptoms aren’t always dramatic like the movies. Many heart attacks start slowly with mild discomfort. Watch for:
- Chest Discomfort: Pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back.
- Upper Body Pain: Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
- Shortness of Breath: Often occurring with or before chest discomfort.
- Other signs: Breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea, or lightheadedness.

🚨 CRITICAL: Do not drive yourself or a loved one to the hospital if you suspect a heart attack or stroke. Call 911 so paramedics can begin life-saving treatment in the ambulance. Every minute of delay increases the risk of permanent damage.
Why Speed Matters
For stroke, clot-busting medication (tPA) can only be administered within a narrow window of time — typically within 3 to 4.5 hours of the first symptom. For heart attacks, restoring blood flow within the first hour (“the golden hour”) dramatically increases survival rates. Every minute without treatment causes approximately 2 million brain cells to die in a stroke.
